Some Laffy Taffy has Egg and Some Does Not

I just gave Nathan an Allergic Reaction...not on purpose. Apparently, some Wonka Laffy Taffy has Egg and some does not.  The little ones he usually eats,  doesn't have egg, but the larger ones like the one I gave him today does. Good to know, too bad I found out the hard way.

After he ate a couple of bites, he started crying and spitting his saliva out and I immediately gave him Benadryl. Then he started coughing and gagging. I put him in his bed and then he vomited a couple of times, he was itchy, his lips were swollen, his eyes and cheeks were red and he started sneezing. Then he become stuffy. I gave him his inhaler, he said his throat hurt. I  was ready to give him his Epi-pen but he screamed NO! After vomiting some more his color changed and he seemed to get better. It was one of worse two hours of my life. I feel so bad. Why didn't I read the ingredients? I can't believe he had an allergic reaction and it was MY fault.

I Googled the ingredients and egg allergies associated with Laffy Taffy and I found other stories similar to me mine.

ALWAYS READ INGREDIENTS.

I am so sorry to hear of this. You have had a tough month! I just found your blog via fb. My 7 yo son is milk, sesame, egg, gluten, peanut, and tree nut allergic, and it is just not easy. Thanks for sharing about the Laffy Taffy. I would not have known this, so frustrating!

I too have a child with severe food allergies. One concern I have is beyond the disturbing hidden ingredients that you unfortunately stumbled across causing your child to have a reaction (which is never fun - so sorry) -- there is lots of literature out there on the negative affects of dyes in our foods especially with children that already battle food allergies. I was unaware until someone began to educate me. I would like to forward the information I stumbled across onto you...

I am really sorry if you received all kinds of emails from me, but I am not receiving confirmation of my comments:

Goodness! I found that out about candy the hard way too. You have had a hard month. Don't be afraid to give the epipen though if you see a reaction building. Little kids are never going to like it. It's worth fighting through the tears, sobs even, to start reversing the reaction. There are few drawbacks to going ahead and plenty to waiting, which I'm sure you know. I'm not trying to pile on. I hate the e.r. (and the bills) too. I have waited when I shouldn't before and it's worked out too. I'm more conservative in using them than a lot of bloggers I follow, but if you're getting the inhaler out it's better to go ahead, I think. I know Monday-morning quarterbacking is much easier than when you're in the moment. I hope you have a reaction-free rest of summer. You all deserve a break!
